Most unit counters are printed on both sides, with the front side of the counter depicting the unit at full combat strength and the reverse side depicting either the unit at reduced combat strength due to a one-step loss (2.5) or a unit status indicator ("Fired" status for heavy weapons, mortar, anti-tank, artillery and rocket artillery units; "Destroyed" status for armor and truck units).
Losses in CHOSIN are taken in "steps". Each unit has from one to four steps depending on unit size and type.
2.51 All heavy weapons, mortar, anti-tank, artillery and rocket artillery units (i.e., any unit with "Fired" status on its reverse side); all armor and truck units (i.e., any unit with a burning vehicle depicting "Destroyed" status on its reverse side); and all units that are blank on their reverse side (i.e., certain platoon-sized units, all CCF Division HQ units) have only one step; if any of these units suffer a one step loss they are immediately eliminated and removed from play (exceptions: any armor and truck unit destroyed on a road is flipped to its "Destroyed" side and functions as a Roadblock as per 5.23; any UN infantry-type unit meeting the requirements of 19.4 is placed in the Field Hospital Holding Box).
2.52 All full-strength CCF infantry battalions have four steps (17.1). All full-strength 12-9-1 Marine Companies (including 41 Royal Marine Commando and 1 Marine Recon Company) have three steps (17.2). All other Marine Companies (i.e., HQ, Engineer and Service Companies), as well as all US Army Companies, have two steps. If any of these units suffer the loss of one step they are flipped to their reverse (reduced strength) side. If a two-step US unit suffers the loss of two steps it is eliminated and removed from play (exception: any unit meeting the requirements of 19.4 is placed in the Field Hospital Holding Box). If a four-step CCF unit or a three-step Marine unit suffers the loss of two steps the unit counter is removed from the map and replaced by an appropriate Remnant counter (17.1, 17.2). If a unit suffers the loss of all its current steps it is eliminated and removed from play (exceptions: any CCF unit meeting the requirements of 19.3 is placed in the Off Map Division Box; any UN unit meeting the requirements of 19.4 is placed in the Field Hospital Holding Box).
4.12 A CCF HQ unit that is eliminated must be replaced in the following CCF Replacements and Wounded sub-phase (i.e., at the beginning of the CCF Offensive Ranged Fire Phase in the next Night turn immediately following a PM turn) by deducting one casualty step from any infantry unit subordinate to that HQ which can, at that moment, trace a LOC to the hex where the HQ was eliminated. If there is no such unit the HQ unit cannot be replaced and is permanently eliminated.
