In late 1941 and early 1942, Soviet forces surrounded a large force of German invaders around the city of Demyansk, south of Leningrad. Cut off from friendly forces, the Germans subsisted on airlifted supplies until counterattacking troops relieved them.
Demyansk Pocket is the first game to explore this crucial battle that convinced Hilter to leave the Sixth Army trapped at Stalingrad a year later. As the Soviet player, you must keep the Germans in the pocket cut off from outside help and attempt to crush them. To accomplish this, your hardy rifle divisions have the assistance of two Guards Airborne brigades, several tank brigades and elite naval infantry brigades, and the justly-famed 1st Guards Division.
As the German player, you must rescue your comrades stuck in the pocket. Your regiments range from those of the powerful 18th Motorized and 5th Jaeger Divisions to the inept Meindl air force infantry division. You have strong units with unique capabilities to lead your force, but there aren't many of them - you can't afford to lose them in ill-considered attacks.
The fighting is fast and furious as both sides must attack and defend at the same time, racing to crush the enemy before he does the same to you.
The system is a simple one, allowing play to begin minutes after the package is opened.
Demyansk Pocket has been judged so easy to learn and so evenly balanced that it is a favorite at wargame tournaments. Michicon's Bob Fix picked it two years running as a great tournament game. (He switched to Demyansk's sister game, Bastogne: Crossroads of Death for 1998.)
